Buying train tickets from Prague to Salzburg

I will be travelling from Prague to Bolzano with my GF on 10th of September. We want to see as much countryside as possible (via train), so we have decided to get the following trains:

7:14 Prague to Salzburg

14:31 Salzburg to Innsbruck

17:27 Innsbruck to Bolzano

For the Salzburg-Innsbruck and Innsbruck-Bolzano legs, we can buy printable tickets and reservations online, but the Prague-Salzburg section has to be done through České dráhy according to ÖBB. CD do online bookings through their %26quot;eShop%26quot;, but we want to go 1st Class, and there%26#39;s no option for 1st Class on that trip.

Is there no 1st Class on that train? Or is it just that CD won%26#39;t let us reserve 1st Class online? Can we buy the ticket/reservation in any train station in Europe? Does that train have any Saver Fares if you buy early?

Thanks in advance!

There is a first class on the train, but it is not being offered as a special price. Only 2nd class. You can always buy it on the day but it will be more expensive.

|||

Just to clarify:

Are there advanced discounts for 1st Class if we _don%26#39;t_ buy online?

Can we buy the tickets in the UK, Holland or Germany?

Thanks! :-)

I expect you can buy it from a reseller, but the price might not be to your liking! Apart from that, you can only buy it from Czech Railways.

Trust me, there is no smallest need to go first class between Prague and Salzburg. Even in the second class there is very good comfort standard on that train (for me personally even better than in the first class, due to the open-space 1st class coach), and this train is hardly going to be full (just board the train about 15 minutes before the departure, and you%26#39;ll have to choose between 20 empty compartments).

Save your money for the overpriced dining car. :-)

One tip for the %26quot;express-sigtseeing%26quot;: While arriving at Tabor station (about 90 minutes from Prague), look on the right side.

https:/…

You can buy it here - €19, and honestly - you don%26#39;t really need to go first class anywhere in Europe. THe difference in comfort is mimimal, but the price is a LOT higher.

You can see pictures here:

www.vagonweb.cz/razeni/vlak.php… - click on the camera icon for pictures of the interior. You will notice that there is one (very uncomfortable) airline-style first class car, and one compartment first class car, but the only real difference is the colour of the seats. It is also the furthest from the restaurant car, should you wish to spend some more of your hard-earned cash there (best to stock up beforehand).

CD sells only some tickets on-line, these tickets are discounted and mostly offered only for the 2nd class.

Copy of one of my posts in another thread:

You can%26#39;t buy your tickets on-line, but you can pre-reserve them using an application at www.vlak.cz/ConnForm.asp?tt=a%26amp;p=CD%26amp;cl=E5 . Click on the yellow sign of seat next to your train name to reserve a bed/seat. The application is in English but the %26quot;Rules of pre-reservations%26quot; appears in Czech only. There is written that:

---

Zahájení a ukončení předběžných rezervací

* v případě lůžek, lehátek a mezinárodních místenek si zákazník může vyměnit předběžnou rezervaci zakoupením rezervačního dokladu v terminálech ČD oprávněných k výdeji jízdních dokladů v mezinárodní přepravě.

---

which means that you can make the reservation 60 to 3 days before the departure.

The unpicked reservation will be passed to others at the day written on the pre-reservation form at 24:00 h.

You can pick up your pre-reserved tickets at desks for international tickets at the railway stations. (in Czech %26quot;international tickets%26quot; = %26quot;mezinárodní jízdenky%26quot;, %26quot;ticket office%26quot; = %26quot;pokladna%26quot;).

Or you can simply buy your tickets in Prague or at any railway station in Czech rep. Very few people travel first class.

The scheme of the train from Prague to Salzburg is here www.vlak.cz/data/C1/vl101_09_v1.htm . There is one car of first class to Salzburg with 58 seats without compartments (number 361, if you click on the car in the vertical list you%26#39;ll see plan of the seats), photos of the interior www.vagonweb.cz/fotogalerie/CZ/CD_Ampz.php… .

Photos of the interior of the dining car number 362 www.vagonweb.cz/fotogalerie/CZ/CD_WRmz.php… .

Another two cars are going to Salzburg (nr 363 and 364, both 2nd class), both have 6-seats compartments - photos www.vagonweb.cz/fotogalerie/CZ/CD_Bmz.php… . The car 363 is mainly for passengers with children and disabled passengers.

The other cars (367-370 and 372) are separated in Ceske Budejovice.

Price of the 1st class ticket is CZK 1976 or EUR 74, 2nd class is CZK 1245 or EUR 46,60, 2nd class in eShop is CZK 508 including seat reservation. I don%26#39;t know the price of the seat reservation, I think it costs about CZK 100 maximally.

Prices can be found at www.jizdenka.cz .

... basically it is a lot easier and cheaper to buy through the e-shop in advance :)
