My friend and I are returning to Prague for a 5 day visit from 14th October. We last visited the cultured city in 2005.
Problem is I just got an email from him suggesting a day trip to Brno. But it%26#39;s 2 hr drive there and 2hr back!
Any recommendations on any trips outside of Prague please?
My friend wants to see more of the Czech Rep itself.
Help and suggestions appreciated.

Brno is a great place, but not somewhere for a day trip - you need longer than that. 2 hours is pushing it a bit, though, as that assumes nobody else will be on the road - then you will have to find somewhere to park once in Brno - best place is the VaĆkovka shopping centre and then walk from there. If you don%26#39;t know where you are going, then give it 3 - 3.5 hours, which counts it out, really.

Plenty of places here to think about.

To be honest it would have been via Public Transport to Brno and searching that I%26#39;ve found the shortest time is 2hrs 30 mins there. Didn%26#39;t bother looking for return journey times. Suppose the other problem is the shorter days now (daylight). I%26#39;d prefer to stay in Prague myself for the 5 days 4 nights but my friend who is asking so i got to consider it. Travelling to Brno for the day is barmy in my opinion, in this particular situation. Arriving wednesday. Obviously prefer to stay Prague first full day so that leaves Friday and Saturday. Saturday Sparta is playing so only Friday is the option. Guessing it will be full of students on return from Brno Friday and the rush hour. I%26#39;m dead against it. Its something more for a sepearate holiday or travelling Europe via Car for the week maybe.
Is there anything alot closer to Prague that will keep my friend happy in seeing more of the Czech Rep?

If you look in the top right corner there is a link entitled %26#39;day tris from Prague%26#39;, and that should answer your question.
You are right, even by train it would be a heavy day out - you really need a few days in Brno to see the city and its surroundings, and if you wanted to see some more of the country, that is maybe where you should have based yourselves for this trip rather than Prague (certainly cheaper) :), and if you are a beer fan that it is the place to go - Hotel Pegas has possibly the best beer in the country, and there are some fantastic unspoiled pubs - beer 18 - 22 Crowns/pint and food at proper prices, even in the centre.
Most students in the Czech Republic stay in their home city, unlike the UK, so that shouldn%26#39;t be so much of a problem.
Anyway, take a look at hose links I posted and also the %26#39;top tips for Prague%26#39;

Time to time I make a one-day trip to Prague by train so I guess it can be done vice versa. In my opinion, Brno can be a target for one day trip and you%26#39;ll be able to see many things, while not stayng hours at museums or restaurants. For strolling in the streets is one day enough.
I must disagree with GCEK about students, staying in their home town. There can be much more than 10.000 students who travel almost every weekend here and back just at MUNI. Not counting VUT and MZLU universities. On Fridays and Sundays there are serious crowds of students at the rail station and on trains. I wouldn%26#39;t travel in these days.

Yes - you%26#39;re right, but most of my friends stayed at home :)
I agree - avoid the weekends. Brno is very quiet then as well, and although you can see the city in a day you need longer to get to know it a bit (as with any city).
Whatever you decide, have fun!

hi,
in february i done two trips outside of prague.
actually took the train from prague up into germany to DRESDEN.takes about 2 hours plus.the train journey up is worth the trip alone.
left prague at 10.40 and arrived in dresden about 12.30 or so.gave 5 hours or so there and then back to prague for 8 o clock or there abouts.
next day we took a trip out to the town of TEREZIN,
hour plus out from prague and well worth it if it appeals.basically its an old concentration camp left from ww2 but is in fact still a lived in town.
you might want to do a bit more research into terezin if your not into history.
