Trip Report – Prague – 9/18 – 9/21

I would like to thank you all that answered my questions during the planning stages of my Prague Trip. This is just a short trip report based on questions people ask about hotels, restaurants and sights.

Hotel

We stayed at Hotel Josef near Stare Mesto and could not have been happier with our choice. Our flight landed around 7:45am and we were brought to the hotel by 8:30am. Our reception was warm and welcoming and they were able to give us a room right away. We were hungry and asked about breakfast and they told us that our breakfast option started the next day with them, but then invited us to a complimentary breakfast right when we checked in. The breakfast room was clean and well kept. The items that they serve fully stocked. There were the usual suspects of bread, cheese, cereal, fruit, and yogurt and then hot breakfast such as sausages and eggs and sautéed mushrooms. One can order pancakes or omelets from the waiter as well.

If you like a modern, minimal hotel, I would recommend this place. Our room was a decent size with a little sitting area. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom immaculate. The gym was a bit tiny, but given the fact that I used it once, it wasn’t really a deal breaker. We were extremely happy with this hotel.

Food

Bake Shop – I ventured out alone while my husband took a nap and I ended up getting a little snack at Bake Shop. I got a Rugulach and a latte and it was delicious

Nostress - a French/Asian cuisine café. We stopped here for Lunch and I had the pumpkin soup and Cod Fish and my husband had the Goat Cheese Salad and Dumpling Soup and I had a glass of Chardonnay. I didn’t care for the pumpkin soup. It was very rich, but the Cod Fish was very tasty. My husband raved about his salad and dumpling soup. Overall the food was good.

Celeste Restaurant – ate dinner here. The view from the top is very picturesque and what a romantic restaurant. The service was impeccable. We were seated right away at a corner table overlooking the city. I had the summer vegetable and my husband had the fresh Atlantic Crab as appetizers. For our main course, I had the ½ Atlantic Lobster with seafood and papardelle and my husband had the roasted lamb. My seafood portion was generous, but I found the lobster to be a bit overcooked. I couldn’t understand the foam (yellow foam like substance) that they use over the food. It hid the real beauty of the dish. My husband had better luck with his lamb. It was cooked to perfection. We had the ice cream and sorbet dessert.

Café de Apostila – We had a late, late lunch here. The food was very good. I had the baby roasted chicken and husband had the salad and of course beer

Zahrada V Opere – we ate here after the Opera and the food was delicious. The salmon tartare, the octopus salad, the fish – all really good.

Knizeci Schwarzenbergsky Hostinec U Zlateho Lva – This is by the Sedlic Church of Bones. Our sausage was delicious.

Danico – We wandered in here around 9:30pm one night and it was such a cute cozy Italian wine bar. I had the lasagne which was delicious and my husband had a little side dish that I can’t remember. As you can tell, I ate the big meals on this vacation.

Things we did / Sights we visited

We visited most of the “must see touristy sites.” My favourite was St. Vitus Cathedral. It was magical and medieval and there was just so much to see here. Charles Bridge was a nightmare to cross. There were hordes of people on it and with the construction, we were moving like snails. Waiting to see the astronomical clock strike is a big waste of time. Look at it, it is beautiful, but not worth standing there with the crowd. We made it to Kutna Hora to see the Bone Church and that was interesting as well. We saw La Boehme at the State Opera House and loved it. We also had a Thai massage, actually several and loved those. We walked around Old Town Square Sunday morning and enjoyed the street vendors and activities there. I loved the smell of sausage cooking, the chunks of ham displayed, the jugs of wine and the cheese vendor.

Overall, Prague is a magical city with some of the nicest people. We felt welcomed everywhere we went and didn’t experience anyone trying to rip us off or double billing us etc. The weather was perfect for the three days that we were there. We didn’t break a sweat even though we were walking 6 hours a day.

One word of caution – wear comfortable shoes. I can’t stress that enough. Luckily, I found a comfortable pair that I wore the entire trip and didn’t have a problem. My husband wasn’t so lucky with his trendy pumas and had to end up buying a pair of sneakers there. Cobble stone streets are not friendly to the feet. Also, I found that I needed a sweater in the morning but took it off later in the day.

Good informative report beans32,

The only thing I cannot agree with you on is Da Nicos Restaurant as regulars on here know its not one of my favorite places but thats only my opinion due to a very bad experience I had there. I also love the bake shop yummy honey cake..

You certainly packed a lot in to your visit I bet you found muscels in your feet and calves that you never knew you had!!!

Oh for an edit button %26quot;MUSCLES %26quot;

Luckily I am accustomed to walking because of living in NYC, so that didn%26#39;t bother me much. We packed a lot in for 3 days, but one can do it with little sleep :)

Truth be told, I wanted to go to La Terroir for dinner on Sunday night, but they were closed, so ended up at Da Nico.

I am sorry you had a bad meal there and can understand how that sours one.

Beans the meal I had wasnt bad it was the behaivior and attitude of the owner and the way he humiliated his lovely staff ,it made for very uncomfortable dining.

Thanks for sharing. Got some great idea for eats for our next trip.

Agree on the shoes. First time my feet were so sore. I buy a pair of Nike airsteps about a month before I go and break them in. They work on the cobblestone streets really well.

Glad you had a great time

Glad you enjoyed it. I am interested by your obvious enjoyment of seafood and am amused by the fact that you ordered it in Prague, a city that is about as far from the sea as you can possibly get on mainland Europe :) Hopefully you tried a bit more of the Czech cuisine than you describe!

TORII - I would have been turned off if I saw the owner mistreating his staff. It was late when we went there and were one of 3 tables.

GCEK - Alas, I am not a big meat eater and would go for seafood if it is on the menu over chicken or beef. I did have sausage a couple of times on the trip and had amazing lamb chops in Budapest :).

Great report. Always like to hear about people eating well. Went to Celeste, but sounds like they have a new menu
