Hello everyone,
This forum has been extremely helpful, thanks for the assistance :) I have 2 quick questions to ask--
1. We will be travelling from Ostrava to Prague--we arrive at the Hlavni Nadr station and have to catch the train from the Holesoice one to Dresden. How far of a walk is it to go from the Hl.N station to the Holesovice one? Or could I catch a train from one station to the next, w/o making a prior reservation (ie Rail Europe, etc?) before I go?
2. This might belong on the Ostrava forum, but the same type of question--do I need to make a prior reservation to get a seat on the train from Ostrava to Prague, or wil there be enough time to get them once I arrive in Prague a week prior?
Thanks again for any and all help.

Both trains stations have a namesake metro station (Line C). You won%26#39;t need to walk, it%26#39;ll take you only a few minutes by metro.
Na ZdravĂ!

Try the following website:
www.2747.com/2747/world/station/prague.htm
ThereYou need to keep going down to read which line goes to what station. Forget the links, though, try the following:
pragueexperience.com/travel_flights/public_t…
www.pragueexperience.com/maps/metro.asp (metro map;
You will see that there are only 4 stops from one station to the other...Line C; no changing trains...

Hi
Its 2-3 km
|||
Thanks so much for the replies, much appreciated! :)

You take metro for 3 stops from Hlavni to Holesovice, 18Kc ticket and about 5 minutes travel. I would not recommend walking! Not very scenic and some 3 kilometres.
You don%26#39;t need to make reservations on Czech trains, they are hardly full. But you would need it for special trains like Pendolino.

You mention Rail Europe - forget you ever heard of them as they are a huge rip-off merchant. Use the national rail companies for buying tickets, and from Ostrava to Prague you just buy the ticket on the day /438 Crowns/$25 each, less if there is more than one of you as you qualify for a group discount - no need to reserve/. The Pendolino costs a lot more - 638 Crowns/$36 and as mentioned above you do actually need to reserve that one (up to 3 hours before departure) - but I%26#39;m sure they won%26#39;t stop you buying a ticket at the last minute and sitting in an unreserved seat (you would still have to pay the extra supplement though).
Have a look at www.idos.cz for all times.
From Prague to Dresden I suppose you already know to buy the ticket here https:/… €19 each way - you need to buy this at least three days before travel, or you will have to pay full price on the day (about €30)
Have fun!

Hello again :)
This is all great info, thanks so much! Yes, that was my concern, if it would be ok to buy tickets a few days before , to go from Ostrava to Prague (I was not sure how quickly things fill up--I have a rail pass already). Pardon my ignoricance, what is the Pendolino train? I learn something new here everyday--I sreached for it quickly, and saw it goes to Italy? Is it a high speed train that goes also from Ostrava to Prague?
Again, my apologies for my lack of knowledge, I am sotring all of this good info. for my trip. Thanks so much! :)

only in Czech I%26#39;m afraid, but it is a fast train, (relatively) takes about 3 hours from Ostrava to Prague. It is more expensive than normal trains, and you need reservation. Although there are special offers in that the reservation is free on some lines.
some say it is not worth it, I would disagree a very nice modern train.

They don%26#39;t fill up, and even if they did (which happens once in a blue moon), you can still get on the train. They might get busy, but there is virtually no restriction on the number of passengers.
The exception is the Pendolino, which is a high-speed express, for which you would need to reserve. However, there are plenty of other options to choose from.
I don%26#39;t know how it would work with a pass on the Pendolino as a pass is generally not the cheapest way to travel in the Czech Republic - it is cheaper to buy point-to-point, especially as there is more than one of you as you can get group discounts, but as you have it already... :) Just get a normal express and and ride as you would on any other train!

Could I ask you when exactly are you travelling (which time)? From Ostrava to Dresden it may be better to change in Pardubice instead of Prague (those trains are riding the same track for a while, although in Prague they arrive to different stations). It would literally mean to wait at the same platform for a while.
Check www.idos.cz for the detailed schedule of both of your trains. It doesn%26#39;t have any affect to the tickets (they are in central Europe mostly connected to the route, not to one specific train).
BTW The centre of Pardubice might be worth a short visit, say 2-3 hours (it is relaxing and surprisingly cheap to have a lunch or so there).
