Being pragmatic in Prague

Hi

Firstly thanks to all on here for answering my stupid questions.

I arrived on the Orangeways bus from Budapest, 7 hours on a bus with only 1 stop at Bratislava is a daunting prospect for a 20 a day smoker like me, but actually it really was not that bad, and it gets you into Prague at a much more sensible time than the train about 13.30.

I was one of the first off the bus, oh dear where have i heard that before i stepped onto the pavement, lit a cigarette, took a really long drag, and looked up as i exhaled, dam it felt good, then somebody tapped me on the shoulder and i turned round to see a policeman pointing at the tiny no smoking sticker in the corner, %26quot;thats a 200cek fine welcome to Prague%26quot; DOH!!

I got to my hotel via the metro using one of the dodgy tickets that i had i purchased on ebay, which was genuine no probs there.

I was expecting a run-in at the hotel because i bought the room on ebay and they gave me a really hard time confirming the booking however, no probs there either, it was the Fortuna Luna, it%26#39;s a bit out in the sticks, metro to Strizkov then about a 10 min walk, there appeared to be a lot of local,s, the rooms have a shared bathroom but nobody was in the other room so i had it to myself, the room was basic but clean, that means clean bedding, no little friends in the bed with me, no bites.

I read a report from someone about this being an unsafe area, give me a break, i passed about 4 wifeys pushing kids in a pram, the whole time i was there i never felt any thing other than totally relaxed and unthreatened, and that includes walking back at night, the bar prices were dam good, 60 Cek for absinth.

I made it to Lucerna for the Terracottta exhibition on the last day but it was just closing doh!,i also had no probs with the trams, i talked to an older American couple at the castle who had been ripped off by a taxi driver from the Airport hmmm, i went to Wallenstein gardens which was closed doh!, the other gardens were nice though, below the castle, i just came across them by accident, the Ledeburg gardens.

On the way back down from the castle there is a gothic pub on the right selling beer for 29cek, i think they were about 65 for absinth.

Vinarna u sudo pub is another one worth a visit, google it, go down to the basement and the smell will remind you of Amsterdam if ya get my drift he he, well i was impressed with my little trip to Prague although my idea of visiting a city is probably a bit too %26quot;PRAGmatic%26quot; for a lot of peoples tastes he he, oh and remember if ya get off that orangeways bus wait 1 min and get away from those pesky cops %26quot;ouch%26quot;.

Good report, Strizkov is Ok, wonder who said that it is not safe.

Bad luck about smokes - surely must be OK to smoke on the pavement!

Torri

I am off to Stockholm in a month with my %26quot;2 Euro%26quot; return Ryanair flight, and the following month Ryanair again :- Aberdeen-Dublin-Eindhoven-Charleroi-Dublin-Aberdeen, taking the train straight from Eindhoven and staying in Maastricht for 2 days, Total (including all charges} £30.

I do not like slagging Ryanair off because i have not had a problem with them so far however, they are scaring the be-jesus,(as they say in Dublin) out of me at the moment, they have changed the times of %26quot;both%26quot; return flights from Aberdeen - Dublin, but the only problem it has caused me so far is one extra day in Dublin so everything ok,so far.

will you smokers never learn?

Glad everything else worked out ok and it sems you got a real bargain with the hotel.

remember to say hello when you are next in Edinburgh.

I always get a laugh wwhen folk talk about safe areas ,you should see where I live!

Well enjoy yourself,I love Dublin..As for Ryan air I have never flow with them so cant comment but my daughter uses them often to fly to Derry and and has never had any probs....now ask me about Czech airlines and thats another matter ,they are still holding on to part of my money....
