safety - solo young woman

hello, i%26#39;m thinking of taking a quick weekend trip to prague (i%26#39;m currently studying in stockholm) just to see what it%26#39;s like, by myself...but i%26#39;m wondering how safe it would be to do so? i%26#39;ve been to copenhagen and lisbon by myself and to lots of other places in europe with other people, and i%26#39;m certainly not expecting it to be like sweden either, but what should i expect? also any tips on time of year to go and what you would do if you had only two days there would be much appreciated. thanks =)

Hi, going by your self to Prague will work out just fine. It’s a nice and wonderful city whit a lot to do and look at.

My advice to you is this, at night keep to the main streets of the city and avoid alleys that are not crowded, but this goes for most cities around the world.

Just being there for a couple of days I would recommend seeing some sites, but also just relax and enjoy the city.

Sites

Museum the main street up to train station.

The Cathedral on top of the lesser town.

Lesser Town on the other side of the bridge.

And at day time walk around in the streets and alleys of staro mesto(old town)

Being there for the first time just relax and look around, its so much to look at only the town itself, that you can take the sighting next time.

I like to go there some time around March - April or in late September October. When it is less crowded but still a good temperature.

Have a pleasant stay.

Having read the Inspector Wallander novels and Stieg Larsson Millenium books, I hope Prague is much safer than Sweden :)

I can assure you that it is just as safe, or even safer than Stockholm (I was there a couple of years ago and it is a beautiful city - one of my favourite places in Europe), and even dark streets shouldn%26#39;t worry you. As I said in a previous post somewhere, light pollution of the night sky is illegal in the Czech Republic, so you might find it to be darker than you might expect, and street crime is very low (except stealing from cars - but that won%26#39;t apply to you).

I would be as careful as a solo female needs to be at night anywhere on earth and other than that, it is indeed a safe place.

I spent a couple of days in Prague by myself 2 years ago and never felt threatened. Like others have said, at night, I stuck to the tourist areas/streets and had no problems.

Hi yesterday I had a colleague whom commented that Prague is unsafe. Would someone give me their comments if they thought Rome was safer or Prague? I generally find Rome ok. Pickpocketing was an obvious problem and I could tell the Italians are very cautious people. I have also been to Shen Zhen (China) which is notoriously known for their pickpockets. haha but i guess i avoided dark alleys so everything is alright.

thank you for all the replies and tips =) any thoughts on the best time of year to go? i was originally thinking of going sometime in october, but might not end up making it there until november or december...what%26#39;s it like then?

|||

Just like summer, just colder and maybe fewer people :)

December is probably the best time to go IMO, especially if it is *really* cold, as it really brings out the magic in the city. Coming from Sweden you should know how to handle cold like that ... There are also Christmas markets throughout the month which sell a lot of old tat, but are very atmospheric.

I spent New Year alone in Prague and loved it, was very liberating. Oh yeah and much safer than Rome.
