I will be in Prague beginning of November and have changed some of my money before I go, but will use an ATM if I run out. My question is, which ATM%26#39;s are the safest to use. I read that some can be broken and it is safest to use the ones in the bank. That way if your card gets stuck in it you can get it back. Is this true or in general are they usually ok. Would an ATM in a shopping centre be ok?

All ATMs are safe, as far as I know. I%26#39;ve never had a problem. The only reason why your card might get stuck is if it is faulty, cracked, etc, or you have insufficient funds.
BTW the word is %26#39;Bankomat%26#39; - %26#39;ATM%26#39; is not used or understood.

Totally safe, just make sure you put it in properly (usually a PICTURE)...
The only time the machine is likely to %26quot;swallow%26quot; the card is if you punch in your pin number wrong.(most machines are programmed to %26quot;swallow%26quot; the card aFTER 3, 4, OR 5 TIMES - here in USA)..I have never tested this in Cz, but it happened to a friend in Lethbridge, AB, Putting the card the wrong way does not %26quot;swallow%26quot; the card, but may demagnetize it....
In some countries: USA %26amp; Australia, for example, you need to tell your bank that you would use it abroad, otherwise they block it....
If you follow Australian forum as well, you may read about the ATM mess there; sudden changing of pin via long distance calls to your home bank.
To sum up - be careful but you are safe with Cashpoint/ATM/Bankomat

Many ot the machines are in the lobby of the various banks and therefore, after hour %26amp; weekend access is limited. (There are walkup machines but I would get your cash ahead of time if you think you will need some)

one of the problems that I have noticed with ATM machines in many european countries is that the cash is disipensed first and your card then comes out several seconds later ,which is opposite to what we happens in the UK .
i have known a few people who have been caught out by this and have walked away with out their card.
I have used ATMs in Prague on many occasions over many trips without any problem.

Hi
To assume all ATM%26#39;s are safe is untrue. Make sure the ATM is a solid fixture, I always give them a shake to make sure they don%26#39;t have a false front, any wobble and I move on. Always check that there is nothing stuck onto the ATM which could be hiding a tiny camera. If there are two of you then get your partner to stand just behind your right shoulder to block anyone else from seing your pin and to block any unwanted attention from pickpockets.
This advice applies to all ATM machines everywhere in the world, including the USA and the UK.
If you take these precautions then you should be totally safe.

there are quite a lot articles in news in past days about ATM scams which are based on some extra device added on ATM making a copy of card. (just read a fresh article that some gang was cought with some wirelles device allowing to send PIN code)
I have nothing to add personally as I don%26#39;t use ATM at all

anyone who speaks Czech can read about recent scams

I reported on this a few years back after returning from a trip with my daughter ,she works for the %26quot;Worlds %26quot;largest bank and a number of the ATMs we went to use she could tell they had the Scanning device on them ,if she had not pointed them out to me I would have been oblivious to them ,I am sure the regular posters on here will remember me posting a warning to travellers.

TRANSLATED ARTICLE.
Prague - probably foreign gang assembles at ATMs in Prague a new type of device that follows the credit card and PIN at the same time. According to criminologist Michael Ihnáta thieves have copied the device with at least dozens of cards and pick the money to clients around the world. Inform the server today tn.cz and TV Nova.
Readers on ATMs foreign banks in the city center emerged since the end of July already at six places at night from Friday to Saturday. Server and Nova reported that the police still hiding details of the case.
%26quot;For now, they picked only ATMs located directly at the bank - whether inside or outside - they are the more credible because they are usually monitored camera,%26quot; said Ihnát. Offenders according to the server and Novy mind that they are filming, because the reader may not return because their data is sent on-line.
The principle, which selects the gang from accounts is similar to mobile phone: it can gang a few minutes after insertion naťukání card and pin to make copies of cards and then select other countries - for example in Bulgaria, Poland and the Slovak Republic.
Police say criminals are constantly on the move, which complicates their capture.
