I am going to Ostrava in November. I can either fly to Prague or Brno and get the train to Ostrava.
Has anyone done either of these methods of travel who may have some advice for me as to the best way to go and how to buy tickets in advance?
Thanks

If it is convenient for you to fly to Brno, then I would do just that. Easy access to Brno railway station from the aiport, see the attached link.

The trains run roughly each hour, take over 2 hours to get there and the cost is about 200Kc, there is no need to buy it in advance, on the day would be OK.

I would suggest to travel via Prague, as the train service is much more reliable on that route. Between Brno and Ostrava it is more likely to catch some %26quot;old%26amp;ugly%26quot; one as well as some track closing. Yes it means some additional cost, but nothing more than about CZK 650 2nd class including all reservations.
Between Prague airport and the main station there is the direct airport express bus every 30 minutes or so, which could be included in the train ticket (buy it from eshop.cd.cz, search for %26quot;Praha letiste%26quot; as FROM and for %26quot;Ostrava%26quot; as TO).

I suppose you are right, it is mainly %26#39;rychlik%26#39; from brno, but you could go 1st class that would make it better, non?

Thanks for that.
The flights to Brno are cheaper than to Prague. Is the train from Brno bad enough to pay a little extra on the flight and get the train from Prague?
Cheers

Certainly not, especially while travelling 1st class. My guess was that the flights cost equally. If not, then go via Brno. The most annoying thing on that route are those repair works, that do sometimes occure and involve using a bus for some part of the journey, which is always a bit chaotic and lead to late arrival. The quaility standards of trains are lower than on the Prague route, but on the other hand, it is shorter. To get some idea: 1st class on Brno-Ostrava is very similar to the 2nd class on Prague-Ostrava, while 2nd class Brno - Ostrava mostly remember those times when my father was dating. :-)
Which date would you like to travel?

its not that bad, slighly older carriages but that%26#39;s about it. I would go first class, not much more, and definitely a time saver if you go to Brno.

These are the carriages regularly used on the Brno-Ostrava route:
2nd class -

First class -

Brno - Ostrava first class is 325 Crowns as opposed to 217 Crowns in second. You don%26#39;t need to reserve.
I can%26#39;t see any rail works on that route at present - just bring a good book :)

the closest large airport to Ostrava is in Katowice in PL (actually most of people from Ostrava use it as primary) and it has connections to few places in UK
katowice-airport.com/en/…destinations-map
then there is a train to ostrava (around 1.5 hour)
rozklad-pkp.pl/query.php/pn…
good luck

UK flights to Katowice:
Birmingham
Ryanair $13.68
London Stansted
Ryanair $31.42
Doncaster Sheffield
Wizz Air $47.82
London Luton
Wizz Air $53.66
Liverpool
Wizz Air $55.54
Check individual airlines for dates %26amp; prices.. Just a guideline....

Thank you, that%26#39;s really helpful. I hadn%26#39;t thought of flying to Poland. The flights are very reasonable as weel as a shorter train journey.
Do you think I would have to book train tickets in advance from Katowice and can you get a train to Ostrava from the airport? If not how close is the train station to Katowice airport?
Thanks
