2 Weeks in Eastern Europe Help with Itinerary

We%26#39;re planning on spending 14-16 days between late November to early December in Berlin, Dresden, Prague, Vienna, Bratislava, and Budapest but can%26#39;t decide on how many days in each city. We will travel by train. Suggestion? Any other cities or site you can recommend along that route? Also, buying rail tickets at rail stations vs. thru RailEurope.com here in the US, we%26#39;re afraid of tickets being sold out when we get to the rail stations.

Age and interests would help us a lot.

I didn`t like much Berlin. Unless you plan on doing some serious clubing don`t stay more than 3 days (2 nights)

Vienna-Bratislava 2 days each

Budapest - Prague 3 days each

I don`t know about Dresden i haven`t been there. i`d quess 2 days would be enough

That`s 14-15 days in total.

First of all your itinerary isn%26#39;t taking you through Eastern Europe - that begins at the Ukrainian/Belarus border :)

Secondly do NOT buy tickets through Rail Europe - it can cost four times the real price or more.

Berlin to Dresden costs from €29, Dresden to Prague also €19 - you can buy in advance here www.db.de , Prague to Vienna also €19 https:/… and Vienna to Budapest is also from €19 (€29 if you get the railjet) here oebb.at/pv/…

I would just do Bratislava as a day trip from Vienna (€14 day return, which includes a transport pass for Bratislava).

If you buy these discounted tickets on-line you are restricted to the train that you book for, which means you lose a bit of flexibility. However, you can buy tickets for all of these trains on the day before departure as you normally would, but they cost a bit more that way.

There is NO danger at all of tickets selling out - only the discounted tickets can sell out, and even the full price tickets bought on the day are substantially cheaper than Rail Europe, so don%26#39;t go near them with a bargepole.

NB none of these tickets can be bought at present past 12th December this year as the timetables are due to change - when they do come out you can only buy them from 60 - 90 days max in advance.

Also between Prague and Vienna is Brno which is well worth a visit, and has more to offer than Bratislava, for example. http://www.brno.cz/index.php?lan=en or you can check it out on Google Earth.

Each poster on this board has their own favourite places and least favourite places, but we all respect each others%26#39; likes and dislikes so you might get some diverse recommendations. Between those cities are all sorts of gems worth stopping off at, but you could spend weeks or months seeing it %26#39;all%26#39; :)

Hi there,

I have recently come back from 3 weeks in Europe and travelled on train throughout. I spent 3 days in Budapest, another week in other parts of Hungary for family visiting etc, 2 days in Vienna, 2 days in Salzburg and 3 in Prague.

I didn%26#39;t see enough of Budapest and wished I had another 2 days there.

I didn%26#39;t think a lot of Vienna (sorry to those that love it), but I guess it%26#39;s up to your tastes and what you want to get out of it. I found I was %26#39;bored%26#39; after 2 days. Maybe because I%26#39;m not really a %26#39;museam%26#39; kind of person...

Salzburg was beautiful, but 2 days was enough (not to mention how super expensive Austria is) - worth a visit. And Prague was a big highlight and I would recommend at least 3 days there - if not 4!

From my research Bratislavia is only worth doing as a day trip - my friend is from near there and said it%26#39;s just another little city full of old building - which is kind of what the other cities are too - you could even give it a miss like I decided. Can%26#39;t comment on the other places.

I bought most train tickets at the station on the day I travelled - no problem at all! You can check the day or two before to see if there are any specials and you may save some money. But the trains don%26#39;t get sold out.

Not sure if I helped...
